history

Development of the company 1900–1993

Sylvania's roots can be traced back to the early 1900s. The predecessor companies (Merritt Manufacturing Company in Middleton, Massachusetts and Bay State Lamp Co in Danvers, Massachusetts) initially specialized in replacing burned-out filaments in lamps. New lamps were later produced under the company names Hygrade Incandescent Lamp Company, Novelty Incandescent Lamp Company, Inc. and Nilco Lamp Works. In 1924, Nilco finally founded the Sylvania Products Company in Emporium, Pennsylvania . This developed radio tubes and manufactured them.

In 1931 the Sylvania Products Company merged with the Hygrade Incandescent Lamp Company to form the Hygrade Sylvania Corporation. Only a few months after the attack on Pearl Harbor , the company introduced almost entirely on war production order and now called himself Sylvania Electric Products, Inc . At that time, Sylvania managed to produce a fully functional proximity fuse . As a result of its rapid growth, the company expanded its portfolio to include many areas and, in addition to lamps and radio tubes, now also manufactured lights, radar display devices and entertainment electronics such as televisions and radios.

In 1959 Sylvania Electric Products merged with General Telephone and became a manufacturer of electronics, lighting, TV, radio and chemistry and metallurgy. The new company was called General Telephone & Electric Corporation . Sylvania continued to operate as a separate business unit producing cameras, photo flash bulbs, general lighting, televisions and anti-missile defense systems. In 1981 GTE sold its consumer electronics company to Philips North America.

Division of the group in 1993

In the early 1990s it was clear that GTE would have to make significant investments in the emerging mobile communications sector in order to remain competitive. It was therefore decided to sell Sylvania to fund these new investments. At that time, Sylvania, GE, Philips and Osram each held around a quarter of the world market. International monopoly regulations prohibited the takeover of the entire Sylvania group by one of these three competitors. Therefore an agreement was reached according to which the company was split up. Osram received the brand and distribution rights to Sylvania in North America, Mexico and Puerto Rico. The rest of the company in Europe, Asia and Latin America and the associated trademark rights were the subject of a management buyout . This led to the establishment of SLI Holdings International LLC.

Havells Sylvania 2007

In April 2007, SLI was acquired by Havells India Ltd. acquired and now operates under the name Havells Sylvania. Havells India Ltd. Corporate group is one of the largest and fastest growing manufacturers of electrical components and systems in India. With 94 branches and sales offices and 8,000 employees in over 50 countries, the group generates sales of 1.25 billion US dollars .
