Elvis Recorded Live on Stage in Memphis Having Fun With Elvis on Stage Promised Land

Having Fun With Elvis on Stage is a live album by the American singer Elvis Presley . It was released in October 1974.

Background and content

Having Fun With Elvis on Stage is an attempt by Presley's manager Colonel Tom Parker to be able to release a work by his protégé through a specially founded record label called Boxcar Records , without coming into conflict with RCA Records , which owns the rights to all musical publications of the singer. To do this he made an album that did not contain music; instead, the entire tone consisted of jokes , anecdotes , self-deprecating comments and introductions, which the musician gave in between the actual songs at several of his concerts . However, as the context was lost due to the cutting out of the songs, to which his mono and dialogues sometimes referred, as well as the lack of the visual component of the stage shows, a not inconsiderable part of the content can hardly be understood. Under Parker, the album was initially available exclusively as a souvenir at concerts by the world star. However, RCA Records was ultimately able to secure the rights, after which the work was widely published. Presley himself distanced himself from Having Fun With Elvis on Stage and caused it to be taken off the market, which is why it is now considered a rarity .

Cover design

The cover of Having Fun With Elvis on Stage shows six black and white - Photographs of Elvis Presley during a concert. On all of them he wears his now iconic white jumpsuit with a sewn-on eagle motif and holds a microphone in his hand . The pictures are all individually outlined in yellow , there is a general, orange frame around them . Above is the album title, with the artist's first name clearly highlighted: if the words "Having Fun" and "on Stage" are written in medium-sized, red and the word "With" in small, black , it is large, pink- orange and designed in three dimensions. In the upper left corner the label of the respective pressing is given, while in the right the note "A Talking Only Album" can be read.

criticism

Having Fun With Elvis on Stage received scathing reviews. Not only is it considered to be by far Presley's worst release, but also one of the worst albums of all time. In addition to the lack of actual music, it was also criticized that the excerpts presented on the album offered no entertainment value due to the absence of any context. In particular, the frequent repetition of the word "Well" was panned, which Presley actually used as a transition to the next piece of music, which was always cut out on the album. The poor quality of the work has been compared to a car accident too horrible to look away. Other retrospective reviews said the album was unnecessary for people who didn't need to own absolutely every release by the singer, but there have been worse things over the years. Jimmy Guterman and Owen O'Donnell listed Having Fun With Elvis on Stage in their book on Rock 'n' Roll Worst Rock 'n' Roll because it didn't include rock 'n' roll.

success

Having Fun With Elvis on Stage was able to reach number 130 on the regular album charts in the USA, and also landed at position 9 on the country charts, although the work has no music, and therefore none of this genre.
