Hawa Abdallah Mohammed Salih ( Arabic حواء عبد الله محمد صالح; * around 1984 in the state of Shamal Darfur (North Darfur) , Sudan ) is a Sudanese human rights activist .

Life

She was born in the state of Shamal Darfur (North Darfur) as the oldest of eight siblings and graduated from high school , but had to flee from her home village shortly after her final exams in 2003 because of the Darfur conflict . She spent much of her young adult life in the Abu Shouk refugee camp in Al-Fashir . She developed into a prominent voice in the camp, working with officials from the United Nations and the American NGO International Rescue Committee (IRC) to spread information and awareness about conditions in the camp: raped or traumatized women and children, injuries, medical undersupply. In 2007 she began studying in al-Fashir and then worked on various projects for the UN Development Committee (UNDP).

In particular, Salih's commitment to women and her collaboration with international organizations met with disapproval from the authorities. She has been arrested three times and abducted and detained twice by security forces, including in 2011 when she was held, tortured and raped in a state prison in Khartoum for two months . Her release came under pressure from international and US human rights groups.

After her release, she fled Sudan to Egypt and applied for asylum in the United States five months later. It was represented pro bono by Mary Gay Scanlon , later a member of the US House of Representatives from Pennsylvania.

Despite the personal harassment and political challenges she faced, Hawa hoped to return to her home country in 2012 to continue to defend the rights of Darfuris, especially the rights of women and children.

Awards and honors

In 2012, the United States Department of State announced that she would be one of ten recipients of the International Women of Courage Award for the year. Salih received the award from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on March 8, 2012 .
