Mary Gay Scanlon (born August 30, 1959 in Watertown , New York ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ). Since November 13, 2018 she has been a deputy of the State of Pennsylvania a member of the United States House of Representatives .

Life

Mary Gay Scanlon grew up with two sisters in Watertown, New York. She studied law at Colgate University , where she received her bachelor's degree, and from the University of Pennsylvania , which she graduated with a Juris Doctor degree in 1984 . After graduation, Scanlon was a trainee lawyer at the Superior Court of Pennsylvania . From 2007 to 2015 she was a member of the Education Committee for the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District, which she chaired from 2009 to 2011. Mary Gay Scanlon is married with three grown children and lives in Swarthmore .

On February 25, 2018, Mary Gay Scanlon announced her candidacy for the seat of the Pennsylvania fifth congressional electoral district in the US House of Representatives. This constituency emerged for the upcoming election from what was then the seventh congressional electoral district, for which Republican Pat Meehan was sitting in the House of Representatives at that time . He resigned from the House of Representatives on April 27, 2018. On May 15, 2018, Scanlon prevailed against nine other candidates in the party primary . In the congressional election on November 6, 2018 , Scanlon prevailed against Pearl Kim. On the same day, she also won the by-election for his vacant seat in the House of Representatives, which was scheduled for Meehan's resignation. Scanlon was sworn in on November 13, 2018.

Mary Gay Scanlon was a MP for the seventh congressional electoral district until January 3, 2019. After a reorganization of the constituencies, this became the fifth constituency. This includes Delaware County and a small part of Montgomery County . In the House of Representatives, Scanlon is Vice-Chair of the Committee on the Judiciary and also a member of the Committee on Rules and the Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress.
