Patrick Leo "Pat" Meehan (born October 20, 1955 in Cheltenham , Montgomery County , Pennsylvania ) is an American lawyer and politician of the Republican Party . From January 2011 to April 2018 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Family, education and work

Pat Meehan attended Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia until 1974 and then studied at Bowdoin College in Brunswick ( Maine ) until 1978 . After completing a law degree at Temple Law School in Philadelphia, he was admitted to the bar in 1986 and began to work as such. Between 1996 and 2001, he was a District Attorney in Delaware County ; from 2001 to 2008 he served as the federal attorney for the eastern part of Pennsylvania. In 1991 and 1994 he was on the staff of then Republican Senator Arlen Specter .

Pat Meehan is married and has three sons. The family lives in Drexel Hill .

Political career

In the 2010 election , Meehan was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh congressional constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Democrat Joe Sestak on January 3, 2011 . In Congress he was a member of the Homeland Security Committee , the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the Transport Committee, as well as a total of seven sub-committees. As a member of the Ethics Committee, he was responsible, among other things, for allegations against MPs for sexual harassment.

Last re-elected in 2016 , his mandate would have run until January 3, 2019. In January 2018, allegations against Meehan became public that he had sexually molested a younger employee. He said that he called himself a soul mate towards her, but that he was not looking for a love affair. According to the New York Times , he became hostile towards her when she started a relationship with another man; she felt traumatized. Meehan then declared that he would not run again in the 2018 election. On April 27, 2018, he announced that he would be stepping down from his mandate with immediate effect. He also said he would privately repay $ 39,000 that he had taken from his office account and used to settle a lawsuit over the abuse allegation. The by-election for the remaining term of Meehan's congressional mandate will take place at the same time as the general election in November 2018 , in which Meehan's successor will be determined from January 3, 2019 in changed electoral district boundaries. There the Democrat Mary Gay Scanlon was elected as Meehan's successor.
