The  Hawaiian Sign Language , in English as Hawaiʻi Sign Language (HSL), alternatively  Old Hawaiʻi Sign Language or  Hawaiʻi Pidgin Sign Language , was a natural sign language from Hawaii . Although this language has been documented since the 1820s, it wasn't linguistically classified until 2013.

Today the Hawaiian Sign Language is almost extinct and has been replaced by the American Sign Language (ASL); some older residents are still bilingual in HSL and ASL. Originally it was assumed that the ASL originated, but it has now been proven that the two languages are not related to each other.

HSL is not a pidgin language , although the outdated term  Hawaiʻi Pidgin Sign Language  suggests it. HSL also has no relationship with Hawaii Pidgin English . Today linguists use the term Hawaiʻi Sign Language , this is also the name of the language in ISO 639-3 (as of 2014).

There is evidence of a village sign language around 1820 that was used by both deaf and hearing people. Although HSL may have been influenced by later immigrants , HSL has little in common with today's ASL or other languages. The establishment of a school for the deaf in 1914 promoted the spread of the language among students. The introduction of ASL in the previously orally run school led to a decline in HSL.
