The Hawai River is a small river in the Bay of Plenty region on the North Island of New Zealand .

The river rises south of the 1,113 m high Puketoetoe in the northern Raukumara Range extends meander- northwest and flows down from an estimated 30 km near the small settlement of Hawaii and 5 km northeast of the settlement Torere in the Pacific Ocean . The Hawai River drains an area of ​​around 74 km 2 , which is characterized by steep mountain slopes and reaches a height of 969 m. State Highway 35 , which runs from Opotiki to Gisborne , crosses the river directly at the estuary .

The river crosses a densely forested mountain landscape with almost untouched nature, only the last 3 km of the river bed to the estuary are wide enough, have sandbanks and are therefore accessible. The river has good fishing grounds.
