The fish are endemic to Hawaii and the Johnston Atoll 1000 km south in the north-central Pacific at depths of one to 50 meters. There they replace the closely related three-point Prussian fish ( Dascyllus trimaculatus ).

Hawaiian Prussian fish grow to be four inches long. They are high-backed and have a plain gray base color. Their scales have a dark border and give the fish a characteristic net-like pattern. The head and fins are also dark. They have 18 to 20 scales along the lateral line organ . The number of gill trap processes is 22 to 25.
Fins formula : dorsal XII / 14–16, anal II / 14–15, pectoral 19–21
Way of life
The fish live in corals and rock reefs. Young fish live like anemonefish with the sea anemone Heteractis malu in symbiosis or in and above sticks of the bushy stony coral genus Pocillopora . They feed on zooplankton , small bottom-dwelling invertebrates, and algae. The fish have already been multiplied in the aquarium. They become sexually mature after a year. In their natural habitat, the breeding season is from May to August.
