Haworthia mutica is a species of the genus Haworthia in the subfamily of the Affodilla family (Asphodeloideae).

Haworthia mutica grows without a trunk and individually. The 12 to 15 trimmed leaves form a rosette with a diameter of 6 to 8 centimeters. The brownish green, barely translucent leaf blade is 6 inches long and 1.5 inches wide. The tip is blunt. There are several longitudinal lines on the leaf surface.

The inflorescence reaches a length of up to 20 centimeters. The white flowers have brownish veins.

Systematics and distribution

Haworthia mutica is widespread in the Western Cape province of South Africa.

The first description by Adrian Hardy Haworth was published in 1821. Nomenclatory synonyms are Aloe mutica (Haw.) Roem. & School f. (1829), Haworthia retusa var. Mutica (Haw.) Baker (1896) and Haworthia otzenii G.G.Sm. (1945).

A distinction is made between the following varieties :

  • Haworthia mutica var. Mutica
  • Haworthia mutica var. Nigra M.B.Bayer
