Haworthia turgida is a species of the genus Haworthia in the subfamily of the Affodil family (Asphodeloideae).

description

Haworthia turgida grows partially stemless and sprouting. The 20 to 40 ovate-lanceolate, recurved or slightly trimmed leaves form a rosette with a diameter of 5 to 10 centimeters. The yellow-green, firm leaf blade is 4 inches long and 1.2 inches wide. It is often as thick as it is wide. The leaf surface is usually speckled. The leaf edge and the leaf quill are thorny.

The inflorescence reaches a length of 15 to 20 centimeters and consists of 20 to 30 flowers . The slender flowers are brownish-white and have dark veins.

Systematics and distribution

Haworthia turgida is common in the Western Cape province of South Africa.

The first description by Adrian Hardy Haworth was published in 1819.

A nomenclatory synonym is Aloe turgida (Haw.) Roem. & School f. (1829). Another synonym is Haworthia rodinii hort. (no year, nom. invalid ICBN -Article 29.1).

A distinction is made between the following varieties :

  • Haworthia turgida var. Turgida
  • Haworthia turgida var. Longibracteata (GGSN). MBBayer
  • Haworthia turgida var. Suberecta Poelln.
