Supersister was a Dutch fusion and progressive rock band that was formed in the late 1960s.
Band history
The band was founded around 1967/1968 by Robert Jan Stips, Sacha van Geest, Marco Vrolijk and Ron van Eck in The Hague under the name Sweet Okay Supersister and was initially active in the local hippie scene. In the spring of 1970 they released their first single She Was Naked as Supersister , which became a hit and brought the band a recording deal with Polydor .
Supersister's first album Present from Nancy was released that same year; In 1971 To the High $ t Bidder followed , which is considered the most successful album of the band. With live performances, another single hit and the third album Pudding and Yesterday , the band became successful in their home country in the early 1970s.
Then, however, disagreement arose over the musical direction, and Vrolijk and van Geest were replaced in 1973 by Charlie Mariano and Herman van Boeyen. The fourth, now jazzy album, Iskander , was not well received by the fans. Elton Dean eventually took over Mariano's post, but the band broke up in 1974. Shortly after Supersister's breakup, Stips released the less successful album Spiral Staircase with van Eck and van Geest under the name Sweet Okay Supersister .
It wasn't until 2000 that Supersisters got back together for the Progfest in Los Angeles . Further appearances followed as well as two albums with older and current live recordings. Van Geest's death in July 2001 meant the temporary end of Supersisters. A planned appearance at the US American NEARfest 2011 ( North East Art Rock Festival in Bethlehem ) had to be canceled due to van Eck's illness; he died in July of that year.
