Hayden Howard
John Hayden Howard (born December 19, 1925 in Santa Barbara , California ; died October 23, 2014 there ) was an American science fiction writer. His only novel The Eskimo Invasion (1967) was nominated for the Nebula Award in 1968 . The underlying short story of the same title was nominated for the Hugo and the Nebula Award.
Life
Born in Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, Hayden attended Santa Barbara High , studied at UCLA and UCSB, and taught at Jefferson Elementary School in Santa Barbara. He was married to Jillian Pearce Winslow, with whom he had four children.
In 1952 he published his first science fiction short story It in Planet Stories magazine . A total of 19 short stories were published by Howard. The novel The Eskimo invasion is a fix-up of seven short stories ( Death and Birth of the Angakok , The Eskimo invasion , Who Is Human? , Too Many Esks , The Modern Penitentiary , Our Man in Beijing , The Purpose of Life ), the previously published from 1965 to 1967 in the science fiction magazine Galaxy . It is about the Esks , a new species of people created by extraterrestrial influence from the Canadian Inuit (referred to as Eskimos in the novel ) that are capable of very rapid reproduction, which creates an overpopulation problem.
