Hazel Keener (born October 22, 1904 in Fairbury , Illinois , † August 7, 1979 in Pacific Grove , California ) was an American actress who had the peak of her career in the silent film era .

Life

Hazel Keener grew up in Davenport and began her career as a participant in beauty pageants. She won a nationwide Chicago Tribune competition and was voted Miss Hollywood by the Motion Picture Capitol in 1923 after moving to California . The year before, Keener made her film debut in Der Klub der Unterirdischen . In 1924 she was named one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars who were predicted to have a great film career.

Hazel Keener's film roles in the early years of her career included appearances in westerns , in which she mostly played the partner of the leading actor. Keener had important roles outside of this genre, including as a college beauty in the comedy The Sports Student with Harold Lloyd in 1925 .

With the advent of talkies, Hazel Keener's career declined. In the following years she was only in small supporting or extra roles in numerous films such as Frisco-Express , Courageous Women , Dr. See Wassell's Escape from Java or The Unknown Beloved . Most of the time her name was not mentioned in the credits. Keener had her last acting appearance in 1966 in an episode of the television series Race with Death . Then she withdrew into private life.

Hazel Keener died of a heart attack in Pacific Grove on August 7, 1979, at the age of 74 . She was buried in Inglewood Park Cemetery .
