Hector Catling

Hector William Catling (born June 26, 1924 in London , † February 15, 2013 in Langford , West Oxfordshire ) was a British classical archaeologist .

Career

Catling studied Classical Studies at Oxford University . He went to Cyprus for his doctoral thesis on Cypriot bronzes of the Bronze Age . Here he worked at the Department of Antiquities from 1955 to 1959. From 1959 to 1971 he was a research fellow in the antiquities department of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. From 1971 until his retirement in 1989 he was director of the British School at Athens .

In addition to his research in Cyprus, he mainly undertook excavations in Knossos (North Cemetery), in the Menelaion of Sparta and in the sanctuary of Zeus Messapeus in Aphyssou, Tsakona . He also dealt with scientific investigations into the determination of ceramics and in 1973 founded the archaeological and scientific Fitch Laboratory of the British School at Athens.

Catling was an honorary doctorate from the University of Athens , an honorary member of the Archaeological Society in Athens , a member of the Society of Antiquaries of London and a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute . In 1980 he received the Order of the British Empire , in 1989 he became Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
