Hedwig Pauly-Winterstein
Hedwig Pauly-Winterstein (born October 16, 1866 as Hedwig Pauly in Breslau , † August 22, 1965 ) was a German actress .
Life
The actor daughter originally wanted to be a singer and therefore attended the Stern Conservatory in Berlin . Since her voice was not suitable for the opera, however, she turned to the theater at the end of the 80s and began her acting career in Krefeld . In 1890 Hedwig Pauly moved to Magdeburg , one season later to Bremen . There she was allowed to play leading roles in classical music for the first time, including Desdemona, Gretchen, Klärchen and Hero. In 1894 the artist followed a call to the Deutsches Theater Berlin . At this theater she was also successful in modern plays, such as Agnes in Henrik Ibsen's Brand . In 1898 Hedwig Pauly went to the Residenztheater , in 1900 she moved to the Secession stage, where she made her debut with Schwanhild in Comedy of Love .
At this time, shortly before the turn of the century, she married her colleague Eduard von Winterstein . In the German capital, Hedwig Pauly, who was now called Pauly-Winterstein, was a long-time member of the Schiller Theater in the early 20th century . At the beginning of the 1920s, the artist largely turned her back on the stage and concentrated on working in front of the film camera throughout this decade. There she was seen mostly in maternal roles, but occasionally also as lady of the nobility. In Ernst Lubitsch's historical drama Anna Boleyn , she was the first wife of Henry VIII , Queen Katharina .
