Hedwig Thun

Hedwig Thun (* 1892 ; † 1969 in Detmold ) was a German painter and writer. As a student of Wassily Kandinsky at the Bauhaus in Dessau Hedwig tuna is considered to be an artist of the European avant-garde of Expressionism and representative of abstract painting . Her works have been exhibited in New York at the Museum of Modern Art and in various German and international galleries.

Live and act

Thun was a nurse before she turned to painting. Richard Riemerschmid recommended her to Joseph Schinnerer at the Debschitz School in Munich. In the painting class she studied with Josef Eberz , a student of Adolf Hölzel . Max Wrba, the director of the Bielefelder Kunstschule, showed a collection of Thun's works in-house, which was taken over by the Museum Hamm and Franz Leuwer in Bremen. This was followed by exhibitions in the Kunsthalle Bremen and in Maria Kunde's salon in Hamburg. The art patron Katharine Dreier showed her works in the Museum of Modern Art and on Madison Avenue . She also had an exhibition at Ludwig Gutbier in the Arnold Gallery in Dresden.

Then she came to the Bauhaus in Dessau - to Josef Albers , Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky , who taught her the relationship between representational and non-representational painting.

After her return from Dessau to Hamburg, she was confronted with the beginning of the Third Reich , which meant that she was unable to create any further pictures. During this creative break, she dealt with the Japanese culture and published in 1935 under the pseudonym HS Thielen the novel "The medicus Engelbert Fighter discovers the sub-heavenly realm", which was translated into several languages, about the research results of the German doctor and explorer Engelbert Fighter . Only after years was she able to devote herself to art again.

The first pictures after 1945, which she showed in Hamburg and Düsseldorf, were marked by the colorless gray of the shock, which was only overcome after she had experienced their magnificent landscapes and treasured museums in Italy and Spain for a few years. In 1963 the first public exhibition with evidence of this period followed in the Frankfurt art cabinet by Hanna Bekker vom Rath .
