Hedwig von Alten (born March 24, 1847 in Harzburg , † August 25, 1922 in Munich ) was a German writer and women's rights activist . She published some of her works anonymously.

Life

As a member of the von Alten family , an old noble family from Lower Saxony, she received a good education, but soon turned to social studies. In her works she primarily campaigned for the emancipation of women and was involved in the women's movement, among other things with lectures. The speech Female Honor , which she gave to the General German Women's Association in Dresden , was published in 1892. For emancipatory magazines such as The Right of Women: Organ for the Modern Women's Movement , New Women's Life or Der Lehrerinnen-Wart (from 1894 Women's Life: Sheets to represent women's interests ), von Alten wrote articles. At her suggestion, the first legal protection offices for poor women were founded in Austria in 1895. The General Austrian Women's Association made her an honorary member.
