Hedwig von Beit (* 1896 in Frankfurt am Main ; † 1973 ) was a German narrative researcher and private scholar .

Life

Hedwig von Beit became known for her extensive book Symbolik des Märchen , published in 1952 . In it she interprets a variety of fairy tales , v. a. from Grimm's Fairy Tales and The Fairy Tales of World Literature comparing with the inclusion of many parallel narratives and different beliefs. Psychological interpretations were contributed by Marie-Louise von Franz and are based on the teachings of Carl Gustav Jung : The fairy tale characters are interpreted as archetypes and psychological functions. Critics criticized the rigid translation into Jungian formulas or the carefree establishment of references to arbitrarily chosen comparative material. Nevertheless, according to Max Lüthi , the work can "be called a great success". That fairy tales express intrapsychic events is "made probable until there is evidence".
