KT Neumann , full name Kurt Toni Neumann (born May 15, 1919 in Jarotschin , Province of Posen , † June 3, 2012 in Berlin ) was a German metal sculptor .

Life

As a result of the transfer of the province of Posen to the Polish state after the Treaty of Versailles , Neumann's family moved to Goldberg in Silesia in his early childhood . Kurt (Toni is a later stage name) took up the profession of his father, the master locksmith Bruno Neumann. This was followed by studies at the Technical University of Wroclaw and between 1936 and 1939 another at the School of Applied Arts there . Service in the Wehrmacht in World War II ended in 1944 with an arm injury; Temporary work in aircraft construction followed. In the same year Neumann married his wife Olga Edith. About her hometown HagenIn 1945 both fled to the undestroyed Lüdenscheid . This is where KT developed its extensive work in its own forge workshop. In 1999 he moved to Berlin with his wife. After her death in January 2000, the metal sculptor's "life's work" was, by her own admission, completed.

With numerous public and private commissioned works, Neumann shaped the appearance of his long-standing place of work in Lüdenscheid. In 1965, this included the artistic design of the doors of the council hall in the New Town Hall with metal reliefs on the city's history. The fountain on Sternplatz followed in the 1970s, the one on Graf-Engelbert-Platz and sculptures such as the one at Richard-Schirrmann-Realschule in the 1980s . Various sculptures and commercial signs based on historical models were commissioned privately, especially in the old town, which has been renovated since the 1970s. This gave it distinctive new, but nostalgic accents. Mention should also be made of the depiction of the landlady Hulda Brüninghaus, who is considered to be the city original, at the restaurant on Sternplatz, which is named after her, which defines the cityscape . Neumann was also involved in the repair of the Quadriga of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin after 1989 because of his technical experience. KT Neumann preferred realistic representations, primarily of figures and scenes from the history of the city of Lüdenscheid. These usually have an unmistakably humorous and unpretentious trait. Apparently, after the sculptor's departure in 1999, there was temporarily less appreciation of his work on the part of the city. In the course of the redesign of the town hall, the artistically designed council chamber doors were replaced by simple new models and the fountain on Sternplatz was to be dismantled. After extensive protests, this was abandoned and the reliefs of the council chamber doors were also given a new version and were installed near their actual destination.
