Hedya salicella is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of Winder (Tortricidae).
features
Hedya salicella is a large and showy species of the genus Hedya , the representatives of the species reach a wingspan of 19 to 24 millimeters. There are white and maroon areas on the forewings of both sexes. The size of the white spot on the forewings is not very variable. There is a sexual dimorphism: the hind wings of the males are gray-brown and lighter at the base, those of the females are a single color, dark brown.
The caterpillar is dirty red-brown in color. The head, neck shield and warts are black.
distribution
Hedya salicella is native to the Palearctic . The species is widespread in Central Europe and not rare. It is absent in North Africa and Asia Minor . In the east the distribution area extends over the Caucasus and Kazakhstan to Siberia , the Russian Far East and China .
The species inhabits damp and shady forest edges, parks and ruderal areas .
biology
The larvae develop between the spun leaves of the forage plant from May to June. These include white willow ( Salix caprea ), aspen ( Populus tremula ) and black poplar ( Populus nigra ). Occasionally a second generation is formed between July and August. The moths can be observed from late May to August (or early September).
