Hegel Forest Monument

The Hegeler Wald is an extensive forest area of 765 hectares in the area of the district Huntlosen of the municipality of Großenkneten in the district of Oldenburg in northwestern Lower Saxony . It is named after August Hegeler (born November 6, 1845 - March 27, 1881), an Oldenburg bank director. Hegeler owned 132 hectares of heather land in Huntlosen that he had planned to reforest after a heather fire in 1878/1879 . His aim was to beautify the barren landscape. Today the Hegeler Wald monument , a stone tablet that was placed on a rock, commemorates this achievement.

On May 21, 1881, his widow sold the area to the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg for 39,500 marks . Until 1907 it was enlarged considerably through the purchase of further land by the state. Additional, extensive plantings connected this forest area with the ancient stock of the " Döhler Wehe ".

In the area of the Hegeler Wald there are the - partly destroyed - remains of large graves from the Stone and Bronze Age .

The so-called storm of the century of 1972 destroyed 425 hectares of the population, so that between 1974 and 1982 almost 2.5 million trees had to be replanted.
