Viktor Kästner (born December 30, 1826 in Kerz , † August 29, 1857 in Sibiu ) was a Saxon dialect poet from Transylvania .

Life

Viktor Kästner was the son of pastor Daniel Kästner (1790–1867) and Josefine Elisabeth, née. Heinrich (1801–1872). He was born as the third of six children on December 30, 1826 in Kerz.

Kästner spent his childhood and youth in the rectory in Kerz. From 1845 to 1847 he studied at the Sibiu Law Faculty. His civil service career led him a. a. to Broos , until he finally settled in Sibiu and started a family. One of his most popular and best-known poems is the fairy tale “Vum bisen Hanz”, in which “coarse folk humor finds happy and fitting expression” ( Adolf Schullerus ).

Kästner's Transylvanian-Saxon poems, arranged by his father, appeared for the first time in 1862 at Steinhäußer in Sibiu under the title: "Poems in Transylvanian-Saxon dialect, along with free metric translation into High German by Victor Kästner". A new edition with a detailed foreword was obtained from Adolf Schullerus in 1895, of which a “reprint” was published in 1926 by W. Krafft in Sibiu. In 1929 Martin Kutschis obtained a collection of Kästner poems set to music, of which only "De Brockt um Ald (Um Ald, um Ald, um giele Rin ...)" is sung.
