The Heidelberg Hotel , also known as the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center , is a hotel and monument in Baton Rouge , the capital of the US state Louisiana .
architecture
The building is ten stories high and stylistically can be roughly assigned to the neo-Romanesque . Although the hotel has undergone several renovations throughout history, it has retained most of its architecturally significant features. Therefore, the external shape of the building still looks like an eclectic skyscraper typical of the 1920s . The brick- clad steel frame building originally had a central foyer with several adjoining rooms and a bar on the ground floor , while a large ballroom was located on the top floor .
history
It was built in 1927 by the architect Edward F. Neild and at that time was a major attraction in downtown Baton Rouge. During his tenure as governor of Louisiana, Huey Long chose the largest hotel room in town, which was in the Heidelberg Hotel, as his place of residence. In its role as Long's unofficial headquarters, the hotel soon became a political center of Louisiana, surpassed only by the state legislature. He wrote most of his autobiography Every Man a King in his suite in the Heidelberg Hotel .
On May 10, 1982, the Heidelberg Hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a monument . On August 5, 2008, the monument protection zone was expanded to include the Hotel King, which is in the immediate vicinity.
