description

The nature park , which was founded in 1989 with the name Hochmoor Gemeindeau - Heidenreichstein , has been a community nature reserve since 1981 . In 2005 it was redesigned and renamed the Heidenreichsteiner Moor Nature Park . It is an example of moors that have been carefully opened to tourism, while at the same time concepts for conservation and careful use are implemented.

The moor landscape begins in the north as a high moor and continues to the south as a transition moor . At the edge of the Winkelauerteich there is a silting bog. In addition to the Winkelauerteich, the community pond is another stagnant body of water in the nature park.

The Heidenreichsteiner Moor is a case of former peat cuttings that have regenerated naturally since they were no longer used. The regeneration has reached a stage in which the moor surface has grown out of the groundwater area to such an extent that woody plants (birch, red pines) can develop. The old drainage ditches, which are still active, play a special role. In order to preserve the open moorland as an element of the local cultural landscape, it is necessary to stabilize the water table with dams just below the moor surface and to remove the emerging woody plants. A corresponding project is being carried out on a scientific basis by a research institute at the University of Vienna.

Natural values

In the nutrient-poor moor, the round-leaf sundew catches insects with the help of sticky hair in order to get to minerals
Bank vegetation of the Winkelau pond
The large water hose catches microorganisms with ingenious underwater bubbles and thus secures additional nutrients

Flora and fauna in the nature park

Around two thirds of the moorland is covered with spruce , pine and birch trees , and around ten hectares are open moorland.

There are peat moss , cotton grass , pipe grass , blueberry , bogberry , cranberry and sundew .

Flora and fauna in moor landscapes were vividly depicted in a film that was created over many years in the Heidenreichsteiner Moor Nature Park and described in detail in an accompanying text.

Natural monument

The recognized natural monument Hängender Stein is located on the northern edge of the designated nature reserve at an altitude of 608  m above sea level. A. This rocking stone is one of the typical examples of granite weathering that can be found several times in the Waldviertel. People often visited these places as places of worship.

Built sights

The 2.8 kilometer long moor path and the 3.2 kilometer pond path have been signposted. Information about ten thousand years of vegetation history is available on display boards. It is possible to get directly over the open moorland on a whipping footbridge. In addition, an observation tower, a tree horoscope and a moor treading facility were set up.

Moor and peat museum

In addition to the nature park, the municipality of Heidenreichstein has set up a moor and peat museum that is unique in Europe and has already received national and international prizes, including a European Museum Prize in Helsinki in 1991.

An attempt is made to illustrate the formation of the moors in Central Europe. Flora and fauna in these areas are presented, as well as the economic use and medical importance of peat. Other sections include nature conservation, fairy tales and legends about moorland and the replica of a moor corpse including a description of the accidents that can lead to fatalities in the moor.

Awards

The nature park was named Austrian Nature Park of the Year by the Association of Austrian Nature Parks (VNÖ) in 2005 because it managed to manage the balancing act between protecting the sensitive moorland and opening it up to visitors.

In 2007, the Nature Park Association received the Hans Coppel sponsorship award for special achievements in nature and environmental protection in Lower Austria in connection with the various events that take place in the nature park throughout the year.
