Heiko Waller

Heiko Waller (born January 20, 1943 in Bremerhaven ) is a German social medicine and health scientist.

Life

Waller completed a degree in medicine , which he completed in 1971 with the state examination. In 1973 he received his doctorate from Klaus Dörner. med. This was followed by studies of sociology and social pedagogy (PhD in 1978 with Lieselotte Pongratz) at the University of Hamburg and medical sociology at the University of London (M. Sc. 1976). From 1971 to 1973 he worked as a doctor. 1974 to 1978 Waller was a research assistant at the Institute for Medical Sociology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf . From 1978 to 2008 Waller was professor of social medicine at the University of Applied Sciences Northeast Lower Saxony (since 2007 Leuphana University) in Lüneburg, from 1985 to 1987 prorector, and from 1987 to 1989 rector.

Waller has lived in Berlin since 2008, is married and has two daughters.

Act

Waller's main areas of work were social disadvantage and health, prevention and health promotion, social psychiatry; as well as social work in health care.

Waller founded the Center for Applied Health Sciences at Leuphana University Lüneburg and was its first managing director from 1992 to 2004. From 1986 to 1996 Waller was the scientific director of the international advanced training courses on health promotion carried out by the Federal Center for Health Education. Through university collaborations with universities in England (East London Polytechnic and University of Essex), France (Université Paris-Nord and Institut de Travail Social in Montrouge), Hungary (Szeged) and Italy (Rome 1 “La Sapienza”) as well as research stays in London in 1984 , Paris 1989, Berkeley / California 1997, Vienna 2002/03 and Rome 2006/07 he contributed to the international networking of health-related social work and health sciences. a. for the EU program "Community Action on Health Promotion, Information, Education and Training 1996-2000", member of the national advisory board for the World Congress on Medicine and Health at EXPO 2000, member of the scientific advisory board of the magazine "Italian Journal of Public Health “, Reviewer for the University of Applied Sciences Research Funding Program of the Austrian Research Promotion Agency and the Finnish Academy for Health Science Research Applications (2008).

Waller was on the board of directors of the German Society for Social Medicine and Prevention from 1988 to 2000 and President of the Health Promotion Section of the European Public Health Association from 1995 to 2008.He continued to do voluntary work for his main areas of work at local, regional and national level. From 1991 to 1993 he was Chairman of the Health Promotion Commission of the Lower Saxony Ministry of Social Affairs. Since 2009 he has been a patient representative named by the German Working Group on Self-Help Groups in committees of the Federal Joint Committee.
