The church of the Redemptorist monastery belonging to the Eparchy Košice is consecrated to the Holy Spirit and bears the title of a minor basilica . It has been on the list of listed objects in Michalovce since 1951 .

history

The Redemptorists built a monastery with a chapel in Michalovce from 1930 to 1931 . Because of the great popularity of the services, a larger church was built in 1934 and 1935. According to the plans of Vladimír Sičinsky, the local builder Juraj Byrtus built the domed church, which should offer space for 1500 worshipers. After the completion of the church on September 29, 1935, the bishop of Mukacheve Olexander Stojka consecrated the church. The icons for the temple were made by Josef Bokšay.

From 1950 to 1990, during the persecution and banning of the Greek Catholic Church in Slovakia, the church was taken into use by the Orthodox Church . It became the cathedral of the newly created Orthodox eparchy in Michalovce. After 1990, the church returned to the possession of the re-established Greek Catholic Church. In 2012 Pope Benedict XVI awarded the church the title of a minor basilica .

The remains of the Redemptorist Dominik Trčka, who was beatified in 2001, are buried in a side altar . The most important pilgrimages take place here on the feast of the Appearance of the Holy Spirit and on August 25, the feast of the Redemptorist martyr Trčka.
