Holy Cross Church (Steingaden)
The Holy Cross Church or Kreuzbergkirche stands on a hill (the eponymous Kreuzberg) south of Steingaden between the two Steingaden districts Schlatt and Fronreiten. Due to the exposed location, you have a beautiful view of the Trauchberge and Lechtal Alps .
The chapel is characterized by a baroque hall with rounded east corners, a straight choir and a polygonal east tower with a bell dome. The two-storey sacristy was (probably) added by Johann Georg Fischer between 1728 and 1738, using older wall sections from 1564.
Special
The church is normally closed, but can annually every Sunday after Ulrichstag (July 4) include the St. Ulrich ride. In the tradition of the Ortisei ride, the riders and their horses first gather on the market square in Steingaden. Then they ride together to the Kreuzbergkirche, where a festive service is held and the horses are blessed.
