Jörundur Brynjólfsson

Jörundur Brynjólfsson (* 21st February 1884 in Starmýri, Álftafjörður ; † 3. December 1979 in Reykjavík ) was an Icelandic politician of the Social Democratic Party Islands ( Alþýðuflokkurinn ) and later the Progressive Party ( Framsóknarflokkurinn ), which intermittently for 36 years a member of the Althing and between 1953 and 1956 was its chairman.

Life

Jörundur Brynjólfsson completed a degree in business administration after attending school, which he finished in 1906. He then worked from 1907 to 1908 as a teacher in the municipality of Nesjahreppur, which now belongs to the municipality of Hornafjörður , and after the examination at the teachers' institute between 1909 and 1919 as a teacher at the elementary school in Reykjavík . In the meantime, from 1911 to 1912, he completed additional studies at the Teachers' College in Copenhagen .

He began his political career in the Social Democratic Party, which he represented between 1916 and 1919 as a member of the Reykjavík City Council. At the same time he was elected for the first time in 1916 as a member of the Althing and represented the interests of Reykjavík for the Social Democratic Party until 1919. During this time he was also editor of the newspaper Unga Ísland between 1916 and 1918 and was elected a member of the price and coping committee in 1917.

In 1917 Jörundur Brynjólfsson became inspector of the state government and held this position until 1925. At the same time he was a farmer in Múla in Biskupstungur between 1919 and 1922 and then in Skálholt from 1922 to 1948 .

In 1923 he was re-elected as a member of the Althing, in which he now represented the interests of the Árnessýsla district for the Progress Party until 1956 . During this time he became a member of the Agriculture Committee in 1927 and in that capacity presented a bill for fishing in lakes and rivers in 1929. In the following period he was from 1928 to 1930 2nd deputy chairman, 1930 1st deputy chairman and between 1931 and 1942 deputy chairman of the Althing. In 1933 he was elected a member of the Salary Committee and in 1942 a member of the Electricity Committee.

In 1937 he became inspector of the Reich government and held this position until 1963. In addition, he was again deputy chairman of the Althing from 1943 to 1945 and again between 1948 and 1949 and from 1950 to 1953 1st deputy chairman of the Althing. Jörundur Brynjólfsson, who was a farmer in Flói from 1948 to 1963, was a board member of the Árnessýsla fishing association between 1950 and 1976 and was its chairman from 1958.

1953 Jörundur Brynjólfsson succeeded Jón Pálmason as chairman of the Althing ( Forseti Alþingis ) and was thus from the 73rd to the 75th session as well as the replacement by Emil Jónsson 1956 President of the Icelandic parliament. He was also a member of the Nordic Council from 1953 to 1954 .
