Bláskógabyggð is a municipality in the Suðurland region in southwest Iceland .
On January 1, 2019, the community had 1,121 inhabitants. There are two important centers of Icelandic history on their municipality, the old Thingstätte Þingvellir and the former bishopric of Skálholt .
The three largest settlements are Reykholt with 260 inhabitants, Laugarvatn with 192 inhabitants and Laugarás with 121 inhabitants.
geography
The lakes Þingvallavatn , Apavatn and Laugarvatn are partly located in the municipality . In the north is Langjökull . To the south and southeast of the glacier are the lakes Hagavatn , Sandvatn and the Hvítárvatn , from which the Hvítá rises. Hofsjökull is located in the northeast of the municipality . In the west of the municipality, where it borders on Kjós and Hvalfjarðarsveit , is the mountain Botnssúlur , a little east of the Skjaldbreiður . In the east of the municipality is the famous Gullfoss waterfall , part of the touristically significant Gullni hringurinn , to which the Haukadalur also belongs. This has a high temperature area and numerous geysers (including the Great Geyser and Strokkur ) and is located at the foot of the mountain Laugarfjall . A little further to the east is the mountain Bláfell .
history
Bláskógabyggð emerged as a municipality on February 11, 2002 through the merger of the three rural communities Biskupstungur ( Biskupstungnahreppur ), Laugardalur ( Laugardalshreppur ) and Þingvellir ( Þingvallahreppur ).
Reykholt
Reykholt (not to be confused with Reykholt in the municipality of Borgarbyggð, also in west Iceland ) is the municipality's largest settlement with hot springs and greenhouses near Skálholt .
Laugarvatn
Laugarvatn ([ ˈløyːɣarvahtn̥ ], German " Warmwassersee ") is located on the lake of the same name and has a school center with Grunnskóli (elementary school), Menntaskóli (secondary school) and teacher training college . The Héraðsskólinn was built by the architect Guðjón Samúelsson .
There are numerous hot springs in Laugarvatn that are used in greenhouses .
