Holy House in Oberwittstadt

The Heilighaus in Oberwittstadt , a district of the city of Ravenstein in the Neckar-Odenwald district in Baden-Württemberg , is a registered cultural monument .

history

Almost nothing is known about the origins of the building. In 1778, Joseph Kilian acquired a building that was officially called a house , which he demolished a little later and had it replaced by the current building in 1787. Kilian's initials IK and the year 1787 are carved over the portal. Nothing more is known about Kilian's person and the reasons why the building was built in an exceptionally representative manner. From 1855 to 1990 the building was owned by the Heilig family, from whom it got its current name and who ran the restaurant Zum Ochsen in it, which can probably be equated with the golden ox from Benno Rüttenauer's novel Alexander Schmälzle, Apprenticeship as a Hinterwinkler , from 1913 . The building also served as a distillery , brewery and bakery . Before the Second World War , the building was still well maintained, but it fell into disrepair in the second half of the 20th century. The State Monuments Office of Baden-Württemberg tried to preserve the building from 1988 onwards, but renovation was only possible after the city of Ravenstein acquired the building in 2005. Since the renovation, the rooms on the ground floor have been used by a bank branch, while the speaking stone museum was set up on the upper floor with stones from the collection of the local pastor Julius Hügel (1917-2006).

Between the door and the skylight , the building is marked on the portal with the initials IK and the year 1787.
