The Heinrich Heine Monument is a seated marble sculpture by Louis Hasselriis , which depicts the older and ailing poet Heinrich Heine .

history

The Heine monument was created by Louis Hasselriis for Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary in 1873. She had the figure set up in the park of her Achilleion Castle in Corfu in 1892 . In 1908 Kaiser Wilhelm II had the figure removed after he had acquired the palace.

The publisher Julius Campe was able to take over the sculpture from the court marshal's office in 1909. It came to downtown Hamburg , and in 1927 to Altona . Finally, Olivia Bouchard born Campe, who worked as an artist in Paris, set up the figure in 1939 in the Botanical Garden / Mourillon at Toulon , where it still stands today.

A long-standing initiative by the actor Christian Quadflieg to bring the monument back to Hamburg was not yet completed in January 2019. If successful, it should be near the Heine House .
