Heinrich Betz

Heinrich Betz (born September 20, 1944 in Reutlingen ) is a German biochemist and physician.

Betz studied from 1963 at the University of Tübingen and the University of Munich , in Tübingen he obtained his diploma in biochemistry in 1969, in 1971 he took the state examination in medicine and obtained his doctorate. med. in Tübingen. From 1972 to 1976 he was a post-doctoral student at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg , where he completed his habilitation in 1977.

From 1976 to 1979 Betz did research as a Research Fellow of the German Research Foundation at the Department of Molecular Neurobiology at the Pasteur Institute in Paris . From 1979 to 1983 he was working group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry in Munich, in 1983 he was offered a call to Heidelberg , where he researched and taught at the ZMBH until 1990 . From 1990 to 2009 he was Director of the Department of Neurochemistry at the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research in Frankfurt and from 1993 taught at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . In 2009 he retired. Betz has been a member of the Academia Europaea since 1988 .

In his research, Betz focused on the mode of action of neurotransmitters such as glycine and γ-aminobutyric acid .
