Heinrich Bokemeyer

Heinrich Bokemeyer (* 1679 in Immensen ; † December 7, 1751 in Wolfenbüttel ) was a cantor, poet and composer.

life and work

School and study time

Heinrich Bokemeyer was born in Immensen in 1679 (at 23 Bauernstrasse) as the son of a farmer. He was a good student, so that he was able to attend schools in Burgdorf and Braunschweig when he was a child . He then studied music, theology, literature, medicine and natural history at the University of Helmstedt .

Working life

Bokemeyer later taught and worked in schools and churches. He wrote essays on religious subjects, wrote and composed pieces of music. From 1712 to 1717 he was cantor in Husum , from 1717 at the Princely School in Wolfenbüttel. In 1739 Bokemeyer became a member of the Corresponding Society of Musical Sciences founded by Lorenz Christoph Mizler .

Bokemeyer collection

Bokemeyer acquired his extensive collection from his teacher Georg Austria and expanded it. The collection became known under his name as the "Bokemeyer Collection". It is now in the Berlin State Library and is considered to be one of the most important musical collections of the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

Trivia

Since 1985 the elementary school in Immensen has been called "Heinrich Bokemeyer Elementary School".
