Heinrich Engelhard

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinrich Engelhard (* unknown; † 1551 in Zurich ) was a Swiss lawyer and Reformed clergyman.

Life

Engelhard was the son of the Zurich councilor Johan Engelhard and his wife Anna († 1504), daughter of Johannes Grebel († 1445). His brother was Konrad Engelhard († after March 1525 in Kyburg ), later governor of Kyburg.

He was first mentioned in 1476 as an expectant of Beromünster and studied law at the University of Heidelberg and the University of Bologna ; In 1496 he became a doctor of canon law .

From 1480 to 1521 he was canon in Beromünster and from 1496 a priest at Fraumünster . During this time he was also canon at the Grossmünster from 1513 to 1521 ; here he renounced his canon priests in favor of Huldrych Zwingli . Because of his old age he often had to be represented by the archdeacon at the Grossmünster, Kaspar Megander .

From 1525 to 1540 he was the first chairman of the marriage court , which was held for the first time in his rectory, and shared the office with the reformer Leo Jud .

He had his house in Zurich decorated in the then fashionable humanistic and antique style, including a fresco by Hans Leu the Younger (around 1490–1531).

Engelhard was married to Anna Wirz for the second time in 1530 and had several children from his first marriage, of which we know by name:

  • Verena Engelhard;
  • Felix Engelhard;
  • Margaretha Engelhard;
  • Katharina Engelhard;
  • Anna Engelhard.

Reformation work

As a fellow campaigner of Huldrych Zwingli in the early days, Heinrich Engelhard wrote reports and writings on the fasting controversy, on the question of images, the Lord's Supper and the marriage court. He accompanied and advised the reformer Heinrich Bullinger , with whom he was friends, from 1531 to 1536 on his "commissions" before the council. Due to his origins from a patrician family and his education, he was probably one of the formative men of the Reformation in Zurich .
