Heinrich Floris Schopenhauer (baptized June 27, 1747 in Danzig , Polish Prussia ; died April 20, 1805 in Hamburg ) was a wholesale merchant in Danzig and Hamburg and the father of the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer .

The father Andreas Schopenhauer was a wealthy and respected merchant in Danzig, the mother Anna Renata a daughter of the Dutch merchant Hendrik Soersman, who had temporarily been the representative of the Netherlands in the Hanseatic city of Danzig.

Heinrich Floris Schopenhauer took over the father's company with his brother Johann Friedrich in 1770. In 1773 he is said to have rejected King Frederick II's offer to move to Prussia and become a Prussian citizen. In 1784 he received some of his father's possessions, including a farm in Oliva, a house in Danzig (Heilige-Geist-Gasse 114), and income from an estate in Ohra. He also owned several ships.

In 1785 Schopenhauer married 18-year-old Johanna Trosiener , the daughter of a business friend. The marriage was a marriage of convenience and was unhappy for both of them. In 1788 their son Arthur was born, who would become one of the most important philosophers of the 19th century.

In 1793 Heinrich Schopenhauer and his family left the Hanseatic city of Danzig after the latter had come to the Kingdom of Prussia after the Second Partition of Poland, like other liberal large merchants.

The family settled in Hamburg, first at Neuen Weg 76, then in a larger building at Neuen Wandrahm 97. There were business and living spaces there. In 1795 the daughter Adele was born, who like the mother later became a writer.

Heinrich Floris Schopenhauer became increasingly irritable, mentally confused and depressed over time. On April 20, 1805, he fell from the window of the attic into the canal and died. It was probably a suicide.

The family then sold the property, the widow Johanna moved to Weimar with her daughter Adele and the inheritance, the son Arthur stayed in Hamburg.

Documents by Heinrich Floris Schopenhauer are preserved in the estate of his son Arthur in Frankfurt am Main, a portrait is in the university library there.
