Heinrich Freiherr von Stein actually Karl Eduard Heinrich Freiherr von Stein zu Nord- und Ostheim (born February 12, 1857 in Coburg , † June 15, 1887 in Berlin ) was a German philosopher , educator and publicist .

Life

He was the youngest son of Heinrich Rudolf Freiherr von Stein zu Nord- und Ostheim, koenigl. Prussian lieutenant colonel ret. D. and his wife Thekla Sophie Eleonore Franziska Freiin von und zu der Tann-Rathsamhausen.

He studied in Heidelberg, Halle and Berlin and received his doctorate in 1877 with the dissertation " On Perception ". On a trip to Rome he met the writer Malwida von Meysenbug , who gave him a position as tutor for the Wagner family. He became the teacher and educator of Siegfried Wagner , then ten years old , Richard Wagner's only son , and from then on belonged to the narrow circle of "Wagnerians".

In 1881 he completed his habilitation at the University of Halle with the text: The meaning of the poetic element in the philosophy of Giordano Bruno . From 1884 he taught in Berlin, where he also gave lectures on Richard Wagner. He published several writings on Richard Wagner and in 1883 , together with Carl Friedrich Glasenapp, published a "Wagner Lexicon". His philosophical writings deal with questions of aesthetics , e.g. E.g. Goethe and Schiller, contributions to the aesthetics of the German classics or to the culture of the soul. He died of heart disease at the age of 30.
