Heinrich Glax (born November 27, 1808 in Vienna , † January 28, 1879 in Graz ) was an Austrian historian and politician.

Life

Heinrich Glax studied history, but was initially unable to find a paid job in his profession. Until 1852 he worked in the kk state administration as a kk accounting officer at the kk sloping domain accounting in Vienna. He also worked as a journalist. He was a correspondent for the Ostdeutsche Post and the Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung .

Political and scientific career

In his journalistic activities Heinrich Glax had not lost sight of his actual career aspiration to become a historian. He maintained personal contact with most of the renowned historians at the University of Vienna . This close connection would pay off later. But first he turned to politics when the revolution of 1848 broke out. From January 25, 1849, he became a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly for the constituency of Austria under the Enns , in which he fulfilled his mandate as a non-attached member until April 25, 1849 and then resigned from parliament like all Austrian members. In addition, he worked scientifically from 1849. He participated in the design and publication of the "Sources and Researches on Patriotic History". Even if his contributions to this work were rather insignificant, it nevertheless earned him the goodwill and support of leading Austrian historians. It is primarily thanks to the recommendations of these friends that he was appointed to A. Jäger's full chair for Austrian history at the University of Innsbruck in 1851 . The focus of his lectures was on Austrian medieval history. Heinrich Glax retired in 1870. The announced history of Austria no longer came about.
