Johann Heinrich Hasselhorst (born April 4, 1825 in Frankfurt am Main ; † August 7, 1904 there ) was a German painter and draftsman .

Life

As a student of Jakob Becker and Moritz von Schwind , he studied at the Städelsche Kunstinstitut ( Städelschule ) from 1842 . Study stays in Paris in 1852 and in Rome in 1855 . In 1861 he accompanied Georg Berna and Carl Vogt's expedition to the north as an expedition painter . The oil paintings of the coasts of Jan Mayen and Iceland created here are in the Historisches Museum Frankfurt , as is his most famous painting, Wäldchestag . He illustrated the travelogue of the polar journey published in 1863. Heinrich Hasselhorst had been a drawing teacher at the Städelschule since 1860. In his teaching activities he influenced a whole generation of Frankfurt painters. His students included u. a. Joseph Kaspar Correggio and the alpine and polar explorer Julius von Payer . He himself painted genre and folk scenes as well as portraits and history pictures. Hasselhorst is buried in Frankfurt's main cemetery.
