Beithan painted in the realistic view of the Leibl School , which he found through his teacher Wilhelm Trübner. He preferred genre scenes like in the works Conscience Question or Reading Girl . Beithan created a particularly large number of depictions of the rural life of the Schwalm, and some very bitter portraits with strict drawings. In his paintings he tried to capture the old Schwalm culture in order to save it from oblivion. Beithan did meticulous preparatory work for his pictures, recording details in drawings and photographs. He built his motifs from cuboid colored areas, which gives his paintings a mannerist expression at times . Impressionist and expressionist tendencies can also be seen in his late work. He also portrayed numerous Frankfurt actors and musicians .
