The epitaph of Abbot Heinrich in the Ebrach monastery church

Henry III. Heppe , called Pius (* in Volkach ; † November 19, 1426 in Ebrach ) was abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Ebrach from 1404 to 1426 .

Life

Heinrich Heppe was probably born in Volkach, Lower Franconia, in the second half of the 14th century . His father's last name was Heppe, while his mother was born Nibling. The sources are silent about the youth and education of young Heinrich, possibly he received his basic education in the Latin school of his hometown. Heinrich Heppe's monastery career is also not mentioned in the sources, so that he is only mentioned again when he is elected abbot.

After the death of Peter I at the beginning of 1404, Heinrich was elected the new abbot of the Ebrach monastery and in 1407 had all privileges written down. The monastery was completely impoverished after Heinrich took office, as Bishop Gerhard von Schwarzburg had withdrawn many resources for his war against the Franconian cities. Heinrich could not pay the maintenance of his religious and therefore had to send 33 monks to other monasteries of the order in 1411.

As early as 1414, Heinrich had regained enough goods through clever management to bring the monks back from their exile . At this time he was nicknamed Pius the Pious by his confreres and was named as the second founder. In the same year he attended the Council of Constance with five monks . Abbot Heinrich III. Heppe died in 1426 on Elizabeth's Day , November 19th. Its epitaph in the monastery church is in the south transept.
