Heinrich Krempel

Heinrich Krempel (born March 8, 1860 in Kreuznach , † December 26, 1935 in Vienna ) was a mountaineer, co-founder of the Alpine Rescue Committee Vienna and a long-time functionary of the Austrian Alpine Club .

biography

After extensive travels that took him to South America , he settled in Vienna at the age of 30 , where he found a second home and discovered his love for the mountains. Due to his athletic talent, he was soon successful as a mountaineer and joined the Austrian Alpine Club in 1892.

Heinrich Krempel played a key role in founding the Alpine Rescue Committee Vienna (ARAW) in 1896. He was elected its first director and held that office until 1912. The ARAW is regarded as the world's first organized mountain rescue service, as a model for similar organizations in other cities and as the forerunner organization of today's Austrian mountain rescue service .

Heinrich Krempel is the author of the book "Apachefahrten" and was often invited to the other Alpine clubs to report on his mountain trips. His humorous presentation style always guaranteed full halls.

Krempel died on December 26, 1935 as a result of a traffic accident in the spring. In 1937 the first hut in Austria dedicated solely to mountain rescue services was built. It is located on the Hochschneeberg and was named " Heinrich-Krempel-Hütte ".
