Heinrich Lang (musician)

Heinrich Lang (born February 17, 1858 in Laichingen , † November 14, 1919 in Stuttgart ) was a German organist , choir director and composer .

Life

Lang grew up as the son of a farmer in modest circumstances in Laichingen . Because he showed great talent in reading and playing the piano, he was trained as a teacher at the Esslingen seminar. a. with Christian Fink . From 1877 he was a teacher at the Hayers elementary school in Stuttgart . In addition to teaching, he studied at the Stuttgart Conservatory a . a. with Immanuel Faißt (composition, organ, theory of harmony). In 1894 he succeeded Immanuel Faißt as music director of the collegiate church (Stuttgart) and four years later he was given a teaching position for organ playing, musical composition and choral singing at the Stuttgart Conservatory , where he was appointed professor in 1900.

Lang was co-editor of the new hymn book for the Evangelical Church in Württemberg , which appeared in 1912. As a composer he mainly appeared with sacred choral works and organ music. In addition, his art of improvisation on the organ was widely known and appreciated.

Honor, known descendants

Heinrich-Lang-Straße is named after him in his place of birth, Laichingen. Heinrich Lang is the grandfather of the former RAF lawyer Jörg Lang (* 1940), who went into hiding from 1972 to 1982 and was wanted as a suspected terrorist during this time. He is also the great-great-grandfather of the organist and composer Sören Gieseler (* 1996, mother Käthe Lang), who at the age of 17 had already composed 62 works, including two operas.
