As a first mission, Leven went to the German colony of Togo in 1911 . Because of the First World War , Leven was expelled from Togo by the British in 1917 and temporarily detained in London.

After his return to Germany Leven was temporarily, from 1918 to 1920, chaplain in his place of birth Lank and in the neighboring town of Gellep-Stratum , where he helped to build up the local church and community.

In 1920 Leven went on a mission trip again, this time to Dutch India (now Indonesia). There he played a major role at the mission school in Ende on Flores Island , one of the Lesser Sunda Islands in the Nusa Tenggara region . On April 25, 1933 (after the accidental death of his predecessor Arnold Verstraelen the previous year) Leven was appointed Vicar Apostolic of the Lesser Sunda Islands. At the same time he was named titular bishop of the historical diocese of Arca in Armenia in recognition of his services and to improve his position ; on November 12, 1933, he was officially ordained a bishop. Leven's work on Flores took place under the protection and support of the Christian ruler Pius Rassi Wanggé , Raja of Tanah Kunu Lima (Li'o) .

In 1950 Leven resigned from his episcopate. He returned to the mother house of his order in Steyl, where he died in 1953. He was buried in the St. Michael cemetery in Steyl .
