Heinrich Ludwig Johannes Bechstatt

Heinrich Ludwig Johannes Bechstatt (* July 6, 1825 in Darmstadt ; † November 17, 1893 there ) was the Grand Ducal Hessian major, later royal Prussian major general and most recently the commander of the 36th Infantry Brigade.

His parents were the Grand Ducal Major General Karl Christian Bechstatt (born September 15, 1780 - March 15, 1846) and his wife Karoline Buff († November 6, 1828).

Life

He received his education at the grammar school in Darmstadt. After graduating, he went on October 1, 1842 as a musketeer in the Grand Ducal Hessian 2nd Infantry Regiment. There he was promoted to Portepeefähnrich on June 20, 1843 and transferred to the 1st Infantry Regiment as a lieutenant on October 29, 1845. From April 1 to September 18, 1848, he was posted to the planning chamber of the general quartermaster staff. During the March Revolution he was deployed in the street fighting in Frankfurt and fighting the Baden Revolution . He fought in the skirmishes near Greater Saxony and Gernsbach .

He was then transferred to the 3rd Infantry Regiment on August 25, 1853 as a first lieutenant. From April 23, 1854 to May 25, 1854 he was on an educational trip with the general staff officers of the German VIII Army Corps to Northern Italy . After his return he was transferred to the pioneer company on May 1, 1857. After that he was assigned to the general quartermaster's staff from May 21 to June 22, 1861 for a general staff meeting in Würzburg. During this time he received the character of captain on May 22, 1861 , and on September 6, 1861 he was appointed captain of the 2nd Infantry Regiment. In the run-up to the German War , he was on June 8, 1866 in the staff of the mobile Hessian army division. During the campaign against Prussia he fought near Aschaffenburg and Gerchsheim. On October 1, 1866, he returned to the 2nd Infantry Regiment, and was also assigned as an adjutant to the Grand Ducal Hessian War Minister. From February 2 to 28, 1878, he was in Berlin on a special assignment. After his return he was transferred to the 4th Infantry Regiment Prince Karl on July 10, 1867 as a major. On July 1, 1868 he was posted to the Prussian Grenadier Regiment No. 8 and aggregated into the regiment on August 1, 1868 . Subsequently, on November 14, 1869, he was entrusted with the command of the 2nd Battalion of Grenadier Regiment No. 8 and on January 6, 1870, he was transferred as a commander to the 2nd Battalion of the 118th Infantry Regiment.

During the Franco-Prussian War he fought in the battles near Gravelotte , Noisseville and Orleans . He was also at the siege of Metz and the battles at Beaugency, Montlinault and Chambord. For this he received the Iron Cross 2nd Class on September 10, 1870 . On December 31, 1871 he became a knight of the Hessian Order of Ludwig .

After the establishment of the empire, the Hessian army was integrated into the Prussian one. Bechstatt was transferred to the 118th Infantry Regiment as a major and battalion commander on January 1, 1872, and was promoted to lieutenant colonel there on March 22, 1873. On October 15, 1874, he was commissioned with the command of the 66th Infantry Regiment, for this he was placed a la suite of the 66th Infantry Regiment and on December 12, 1874 was confirmed as the regiment's commander. On January 18, 1875 he was promoted to colonel. He then came on January 18, 1875 as a commander in the 36th Infantry Brigade and was placed a la suite of the regiment. On March 30, 1881 he was promoted to major general and on September 16, 1881 he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle 2nd Class with Oak Leaves . He was then put up for retirement on August 3, 1883 and was awarded the Crown Order, 2nd Class, with a star .

He died on November 17, 1893 in Darmstadt.
