Life

In the spring of 1948, Pfanne first became a student and then assistant to Elisabeth Loofs-Rassow. From her he received his basic training as a handwriting expert and graphologist. His other teachers included Hermann Fritsche, Anton M. Wohlfarth and Professor Dr. A. Kanger. In 1951, Pfanne went into business for himself as a script expert in Halle (Saale) . Shortly before the Wall was built in 1961, he and his family left the GDR because he feared he would be arrested for his political work (he actively sought reunification in the LDPD ). In the same year he became a script expert at the Hessian State Criminal Police Office in Wiesbaden .

In the German history of scientific comparative writing , Pfanne developed the essential basics of writing expertise: He determined the position of writing expertise within graphology and forensics and emphasized the need to distinguish between writing expertise and characterological graphology. A written expert examination at Pfanne included a psychophysiological analysis, a physical examination, a material description and material criticism, a comparative written analysis, an evaluation of the findings and a conclusion. When making the comparative written findings, he took into account basic properties, structural properties and individual peculiarities. He defined new font characteristics with the structure properties: “Structure properties are to be understood as those characteristics of a handwriting that arise from the peculiarity of the movement control during the creation of the letters and, in their characteristic properties, give the details of the script the character, although of course only from one Structural property can be spoken if the property is attached not only to a specific letter but to a group of structurally related letters or if it is a matter of a letter combination. "

Pfanne was “equally recognized in the comparison of scripts as in graphological diagnostics.” As a graphologist he “wrote a graphology textbook on the one hand, which differentiated the scientific fundamentals of graphology. Just like Müller and Enskat , Pfanne gives very detailed instructions on how to describe the font. In diagnostics, he orients himself on graphic complexes and ties in with Pophal's brain fonts . On the other hand, as a typeface expert, Pfanne demonstrated the importance of typeface expertise for case law. It explains what needs to be taken into account when identifying text fonts and signatures and which aspects make an expert opinion conclusive. "

In addition, Pfanne carried out extensive empirical studies on handwriting adjustment. On the one hand, he demonstrated typical adjustment techniques. Pfanne, for example, suggested a specific form of handwriting sampling for font adjustments. He was always a staunch opponent of expert reports that were based only on photocopies or other reproductions as reference material and demanded originals in which otherwise invisible evidence (writing speed, pressure) was often revealed.

At the end of his life, ended by cancer, he dealt with language in a humorous way, for example his book, which was published last under a pseudonym, which requires the reader to “think outside the box”, for example when solving the question of which body of water is rhymes with the drink of the most well-read Dino-Saurus: It's "lake" because a The-saurus naturally drinks tea.
