Heinrich Gustav Rex Range (born June 3, 1829 in Wobbelkow ; † May 21, 1894 in Greifswald ) was a German gymnastics teacher who was referred to as the "Pomeranian gymnastics father" and who pioneered the training of gymnastics teachers at German universities.

Life

Heinrich Range was employed as a primary school teacher in Greifswald after attending the teachers' college in 1852 . He was one of the founding members of the "Greifswalder Turnverein von 1860". After training as a gymnastics teacher at the Berlin “ Central Gymnastics Institute ”, he took over gymnastics lessons at all Greifswald elementary schools from 1861 . He campaigned for the construction of a gymnasium, which in 1862 was the first in Pomerania was opened.

In the same year he began taking gymnastics lessons for boys at the municipal high school , and in 1864 at Greifswald University . Heinrich Range was the first salaried gymnastics teacher at a Prussian university who was paid for this activity .

His request to set up his own gym teacher training institute at the University of Greifswald was initially rejected by the responsible ministry in Berlin in 1866. From 1868 Range gave instructions for giving gymnastics lessons and gave lectures on the history of gymnastics. The exams were still only allowed to be taken in Berlin and, from 1889, at the University of Halle .

In 1874 the "Academic Gymnastics Club Greifswalds" was founded with his participation. In 1887 he was officially designated as a university fencing teacher.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death, the sports facility at the University of Greifswald was named "Heinrich-Range-Sportplatz" in 1994.
