Heinrich Schmidt-Rome

Heinrich Schmidt-Rom , (born March 26, 1877 in Berlin as Heinrich Wilhelm Nicolaus Schmidt , † September 28, 1965 in Dessau ), was a German landscape painter and portraitist.

Life

After completing his first training as a glass painter at the Berlin School of Applied Arts in 1894, he studied from 1901 to 1903 at the Royal Academic University of Fine Arts in Berlin (Vollmer). As a scholarship holder, he lived on the grounds of the Villa Strohl-Fern in Rome from 1903 to 1905 . In 1904 he went on a study trip to Sicily, where he took the stage name Schmidt-Rom. In 1906 Schmidt-Rom settled in Dessau as a landscape painter and portraitist. Long journeys took him to North Africa and Bali in 1909/1910, to Capri in 1911 and again to Sicily and Capri in 1924. Schmidt-Rom was also known as a copyist. He made copies of Van Dyck's paintings. They replace originals from Wörlitz Castle, which remained with the Anhalt ducal house in 1927.
