Heinrich Steimle
Heinrich Steimle , with full name Heinrich Karl August Steimle (* 1846 in Schwäbisch Gmünd , † June 10, 1907 ) was a Württemberg major and Limes researcher .
Act
After his retirement as an officer in Württemberg in 1889, he lived in Stuttgart and from 1891 to 1892 he participated in the Archaeological Land Survey, a project that was to record all of the land's monuments visible above ground as well as all ground monuments. When the Reich Limes Commission was established, Steimle was appointed route commissioner for route 12 on the Upper German-Raetian Limes . In this function he examined a number of Roman forts in southwest Germany, which he published for the great work The Upper German-Raetian Limes of the Roman Empire .
In his hometown Schwäbisch Gmünd, the Heinrich-Steimle-Weg reminds of him. From 1886 to 1888 he and General Eduard von Kallee excavated the fort at the Schirenhof here . In Aalen , Steimlestrasse by the Limes Museum is named after him.
Trivia
During the excavation in the Schirenhof fort, members of the Schwäbisch Gmünder garrison took the liberty of joking. They let him find a rusty sword with the inscription: " Julius Caesar, his friend Major Steimle ". Steimle is said to have resented them for a long time.
