Heinrich Unverricht (born September 18, 1853 in Breslau , † April 22, 1912 in Magdeburg ) was a German medic.

Life

Unverricht received his doctorate in medicine under Anton Biermer at the University of Breslau in 1877 and specialized in internal medicine. The dissertation Studies on Pneumonia won a medical school award. He completed his habilitation in Berlin in 1883 and became an associate professor at the University of Jena in 1886 , where he also became director of the Medical Polyclinic. In 1888 he became a full professor of special pathology at the University of Dorpat . In 1892 he left Dorpat (then part of Russia ) for political reasons and became the first director of the Magdeburg-Sudenburg municipal hospital , which was officially opened in 1894. He also became head of internal medicine there. From 1902 to 1909 he was chairman of the Magdeburg Medical Society. He was committed to the establishment of a facility for training doctors in Magdeburg. He was the Secret Medical Councilor (1894) and was the Imperial Russian State Councilor in Russia.

He did research on lung diseases and neurology. The Unverricht-Lundborg disease is named after him and Herman Lundborg , a congenital form of epilepsy ( progressive myoclonus epilepsy ) about which he published in 1891.

In the case of lung diseases, he dealt with tubercular pneumothorax (Unverricht's fistula, 1896). Dermatomyositis is sometimes named after him and Ernst L. Wagner (1829–1888) (Wagner-Unverricht syndrome).

On October 19, 1888 , he became a member of the Leopoldina . He was a member of the Magdeburg Freemason Lodge Ferdinand for happiness .

A bust was erected in his honor on the grounds of the Magdeburg University Hospital.
