Heinrich Waldmann (archivist)

Heinrich Waldmann (born April 9, 1927 in Geismar ; † February 24, 2008 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German archivist .

Life

Raised in Merseburg , the high school student was drafted for work and subsequent military service in the spring of 1944 and was taken prisoner by the Americans and French in April 1945. After various positions from October 1945 in the administrative service of the district administration and from June at the Ministry of the Interior, Waldmann was assigned to the Merseburg State Archives under Walter Nissen on April 1, 1951 , which had been taken over as the historical department of the then German Central Archives Potsdam immediately before . Here he completed a two-year training course for the senior service. As a qualified archivist, he was entrusted with setting up the magazine and the technical workshops as well as with the development work.

From 1954 to 1959 Waldmann studied history at the universities in Halle , Berlin and Leipzig . From 1959 to 1962 he completed the course at the Institute for Archival Science in Potsdam as a scientific archivist in the higher service.

In Merseburg he increasingly worked on inventories and headed the use department. The work on the special economic stocks enabled him to write a dissertation on the weaver revolt .

In the 1960s and 1970s, Waldmann was a member of central commissions of the state archive administration to investigate problems in archiving science and worked as a trainer in archives and museums.

From February 1979 he headed what is now the “Merseburg Office” of the “Central State Archives” and as such the negotiations on the return of the holdings of the Secret State Archives to Berlin-Dahlem . Waldmann graduated in 1993 when he was retired. He continued to be involved in research into the local history of the Eichsfeld and in the context of the Brandenburg-Prussian historical commissions.
